Finger Monsters Documentary - Making the Dashboard Monster

March 21, 2017

When we were launching our Dashboard Monster, we made a short documentary to go through the evolution of our Finger Monsters. It features Curt Hanks talking about what inspired him to design our version of the Finger Monsters and how we ended up making one for your car dashboard. Scroll down for a partial transcript.

Curt Hanks with Finger Monsters

Growing up in the 70s I was always a big fan of sci-fi and monsters and aliens... all that stuff. So I really loved the original Finger Monsters from the 60s and 70s. One of Archie McPhee's earliest products was the Finger Monsters. We sold them for years and year and they were really popular. In 2004/2005 we got word that the original molds were wearing out. So, I jumped at the chance to redesign the original Finger Monsters. What a cool project! For the redesign, we wanted to replicate the most interesting part of the original designs and what made those so cool. It was all these great textures and little nubby parts and jiggly arms.

We thought wouldn't it be cool to make a dashboard version of one of the monsters. We chose Grog because he has all the eyeballs on top and the floppy arms.
